Predictors of Physical Altercation among Adolescents in Residential Substance Abuse Treatment

Abstract: This study tested the hypothesis that basic social information-processing components represented by family conflict, peer aggression, and pro-aggression cognitive scripts are related to aggression and social problems among adolescents in substance abuse treatment. The sample consisted of 547 adolescents in two community-based residential facilities. Correlation results indicated that more peer aggression is related to more pro-aggression scripts; scripts, peer aggression, and family conflict are associated wit… Show more

“…Prior studies suggest that SIP skills are related strongly to developmental outcomes in childhood and adolescence. Biased information-processing is associated with internet addiction (Hsieh et al, 2019;Jiang et al, 2016), elevated risk for experimentation with harmful or illicit substances (Chen, 2016;Crawley et al, 2015;McLaughlin et al, 2020;Nickoletti & Taussig, 2006), alcohol misuse (Ogle & Miller, 2004;Sayette et al, 1993), fighting and other violent behavior (Liu, 2015;Terzian et al, 2015;Verhoef et al, 2022), bullying (Espelage et al, 2015;Liu et al, 2021;Luo, 2010), gambling (Smith et al, 2012), theft (Fontaine, 2006), robbery (Nas et al, 2005), depressed mood and symptoms (Geukens et al, 2022;Li et al, 2016;Liu et al, 2016;Pössel et al, 2006;Ross et al, 2023;Venta et al, 2014), and suicidal ideation (Fan, 2005;Yao, 2015). Maladaptive behavior such as disruptive comportment in the classroom, delinquent or criminal involvement in the community, and noncompliance in the home are associated with biased information-processing (Arsenio et al, 2009;Fang, 2006;Lemerise & Maulden, 2010;Orue et al, 2021;Zhong et al, 2015).…”

“…On the other hand, biased SIP is associated with maladaptive behavior such as noncompliance in the classroom and relational aggression with peers (Arsenio et al, 2009; Fang, 2006; Lemerise & Maulden, 2010; Zhong et al, 2015). Biased processing is correlated also with experimentation with harmful or illicit substances, including alcohol (Chen, 2016; Crawley et al, 2015; Nickoletti & Taussig, 2006; Ogle & Miller, 2004; Sayette et al, 1993), gambling (Smith et al, 2012), aggressive and illegal behavior (Fontaine, 2006; Liu, 2015; Nas et al, 2005; Terzian et al, 2014), bullying (Espelage et al, 2015; Luo, 2010), depressive symptoms (Li et al, 2016; Liu et al, 2016; Pössel et al, 2006; Venta et al, 2014), and self‐harm ideation (Fan, 2005; Yao, 2015). In sum, skills in information processing are negatively associated with a range of behavioral health problems and positively associated with a range of healthy life course outcomes, including work and community engagement.…”
