Noise annoyance has caused significant adverse impacts on human beings and numerous efforts have been spent on mitigating annoyance problems. Natural greenery has been shown to be able to moderate annoyance problems at home but this conclusion was drawn without properly controlling the potential confounding factors. Furthermore, few have explored the moderation effect of a sea view. Accordingly, this study formulated a multivariate model to examine the impacts of natural views as well as personal characteristics on annoyance perception. A housing estate was selected in Hong Kong as the survey site for which some of the residents were exposed to greenery views, sea views, or both from their homes. Eight hundred and sixty-one responses were collected via questionnaire surveys and analyzed using an ordered logit model. The results suggest that both a greenery view and a sea view can moderate annoyance responses. Several individual's personal characteristics are found to affect individuals' annoyance perception. The duration of time spent daily at home is shown to have an influence on the moderation impact exerted by a greenery view, while the age of an individual is shown to have an influence on noise moderation effect exerted by a sea view.

Acoustic properties of residential building are often neglected by designers, developers, contractors, and even home buyers. Noises from both the internal and external environments affect occupants' daily lives. This motivates the current study which aims to identify all types of audible noises in Malaysian residential buildings and to determine the physical and psychological impacts of noise loudness and annoyance on occupants in various types of residential buildings. A questionnaire was conducted covering 19 types of noises in residential buildings with participants assessing the loudness and annoyance level. There were 171 valid forms collected from around Malaysia for analysis from 1000 posted forms, responding rate of 17.1%. Traffic noises were deemed as the most undesired type of noise, followed by the noises from neighbors and animals. More interestingly, the annoyance experienced in relation to noise from traffic and neighbors was inter-correlated. While many animal noises such as birds chirping, rooster calls, and insect noise cause little irritation to occupants, dogs barking are significantly more annoying to the occupants. Job stress and occupants' sensitivity to noise are highly correlated with many types of noises. Generally, the influences of human-related factors are more significantly related to the housing-related factors on the perceived noise loudness and annoyance. Practical application: The result of this study could directly assist building developers and architects to enhance the acoustic (sound) properties of residential buildings. This study will guide potential property buyers how to look into the acoustic performance of the building that they are going to purchase and to stay in. All types of audible noises annoying residents in full range of residential buildings are identified and categorized in this study. The loudness and annoyance of each type of noise to resident occupants were addressed. The physical and psychological impacts of noise loudness and annoyance to the occupants in different type of residential buildings are determined, which will improve the fullness of industry standards as well regarding acoustic concern as a trend.

SÚHRNRastúci vplyv expozície environmentálnemu hluku a jeho vplyv na zdravie, patrí k významným problémom súčasnej doby. Týka sa to predovšetkým obyvateľstva, žijúceho v mestských aglomeráciách s vysokou hladinou environmentálneho hluku. Príčinou tohto nežiaduceho javu je najmä narastajúca doprava a priemysel. Hladiny hluku narastajú nielen v niektorých typických pracovných prevádzkach, ale obťažujú ľudí už aj pri rekreácii, oddychu, či spoločenských aktivitách. Tento negatívny faktor životného prostredia sa odlišuje od iných škodlivín tým, že sa jeho hladiny stále zvyšujú a pôsobí na človeka neustále, teda aj v čase určenom na relaxáciu ako napríklad pri spánku. Z verejno-zdravotníckeho hľadiska je významné, že rušivé pôsobenie environmentálneho hluku sa prejavuje neskôr rastúcim rizikom chronických ochorení, ktoré majú priamu súvislosť s poruchami spánku a iných funkcií vo vegetatívnej, endokrinnej a regulačnej sfére. Cieľom tejto prehľadovej práce je zosumarizovať aktuálne poznatky o škodlivých sluchových a nesluchových účinkoch environmentálneho hluku, ktoré bude možné využiť pri kvantifikácií rizika ako aj pri pláno-vaní preventívnych opatrení.Klíčová slova: hluk -expozícia, prevencia hluku, prostredie životné -vplyv na zdravie SUMMARYThe growing impact of environmental noise exposure on health is a major problems of our times. It particularly concerns the urban population living in areas with high levels of environmental noise. Increased levels of traffic and industrial activity are the major causative factors of this phenomenon. Increased noise levels cause interpersonal problems not only in occcupational settings, but during recreation, leisure, and social activities. This negative environmental factor differs from others in specifically affecting sleep and relentlessly increasing. In terms of public health, the disturbing effects of environmental noise manifest in increased risk of chronic diseases dircetly associated with sleep disorders and other vegetative, endocrine and regulatory functions. The aim of this review is to summarize current knowledge about the harmful auditory and non-auditory effects of environmental noise, which can be used in the risk quantification and planning of preventive measures.Key words: noise -exposure, noise prevention, environment -health effects Hluk vždy predstavoval dôležitý problém životné-ho prostredia. Hodnotenie rizika hlukovej expozície predstavuje mimoriadne naliehavý problém v dôsled-ku enormného nárastu akustickej energie. V porovnaní s inými znečisťujúcimi látkami hluk nepôsobí okamži-te, jeho hladiny sa neustále zvyšujú a pôsobí na člove-ka neustále, teda aj v čase určenom na relaxáciu. Kontrole environmentálneho hluku bráni spoločenská nenahraditeľnosť dopravy a to, že v mnohých prípadoch neexistujú technické možnosti, ako účinne tlmiť hluk.Hluková záťaž populácie pochádza v 40 % z pracovného a 60 % z mimopracovného prostredia.
