Predictors of Maternal‐Fetal Attachment: An Integrative Review

Abstract: (1) Extensive studies have been conducted that explore the mother‐infant relationship from the perspective of maternal attachment but limited research has been conducted on maternal‐fetal attachment. In this integrative review the current state of knowledge on prenatal attachment is examined. Next predictors of maternal‐fetal attachment that have been found and supported by scientific research are explored. Finally, practice and research implications based on analysis of the current status of maternal‐fetal at… Show more

“…The multigravid mothers in this study had significantly lower maternal-fetal attachment scores than the primigravid mothers. This difference with their primigravid counterparts may indicate the possibility of less focus on the current pregnancy and on their unborn child and perhaps more attention to their other child (Erickson, 1996). It has been suggested that multigravid women experience more fatigue and sleep problems and decreased functional status (Waters & Lee, 1996).…”

“…Specific topics of the latter disciplines that were reviewed in recent articles are only briefly summarized in what follows (e.g. demographic variables; Cannella, 2005;Erickson, 1996). Notice that for many topics or factors conflicting results are revealed, with some studies showing positive relationships, some negative relationships and others no relationship.…”

“…Third, several reviews on MFR scales have been published. Reviews by Muller (1992), Erickson (1996) and Cannella (2005) were mainly focused on the MFAS, while the review by Beck (1999) included information on selected instruments available for measuring prenatal attachment and adaptation to pregnancy. Fourth, although the term 'maternal-foetal attachment' is often used to describe the MFR that is measured with the MFAS, MAAS and PAI, we suggest avoiding the use of the term 'attachment' in this context.…”

“…A magzat létezése, fejlődése, reakciói révén egy sajátos dinamika alakul ki, amely megalapozza a kettejük közötti prenatális kötődést (Alhusan, 2008;Brandon, Pitts, Denton, Stringer, & Evans, 2009;Cannella, 2005;Erickson, 1996). Kellő bevonódás mellett, a méhen belüli kapcsolat a magzattal kiterjed az anyát megtartó személyekre, elsősorban az apára (Bowen & Miller, 1980), és kihatással lehet a későbbi anya-csecsemő kapcsolatra (Damato, 2004;.…”
