Predictors of malignant transformation in oral leukoplakia and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia: An observational prospective study including the DNA ploidy status

Abstract: BackgroundThis prospective observational study investigated the determinants of malignant transformation (MT) in localized oral leukoplakia (OL) and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL).MethodsDemographic, clinical, histological, and DNA ploidy status data were collected at enrolment. Survival analysis was performed (MT being the event of interest).ResultsOne‐hundred and thirty‐three patients with OL and 20 patients with PVL entered the study over 6 years (mean follow‐up 7.8 years). The presence of OED, D… Show more

“…The malignancy rate of PVL correlates with the year of study [ 7 ]. To date, there are no recognized prognostic clinical pathological features or biomarkers for PVL malignancy [ 22 , 23 ]. This study applies the most current diagnostic criteria to conduct a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the clinical pathological characteristics of PVL, calculates the malignancy rate, and investigates potential risk factors for MT.…”
