Predictors of HAV/HBV vaccination completion among methadone maintenance clients

Abstract: This randomized, controlled study (N = 256) was conducted to compare three interventions designed to promote hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination completion among clients undergoing methadone maintenance (MM) treatment. Participants were recruited from five MM treatment sites in Southern California and randomized into three groups: Motivational Interviewing-Single (MI-Single), Motivational Interviewing-Group (MI-Group); and Nurse-Led Hepatitis Health Promotion (HHP). “…Another study amongst street recruited injecting drug users in San Francisco concurred with only a 47% vaccination completion rate [Lum et al, 2003]. Reasons cited for refusing HBV immunization include “just didn't want it” [Nyamathi et al, 2010] which was corroborated by the current study. Alternative strategies are needed and although controversial, authors of the San Francisco study suggested monetary remuneration [Lum et al, 2003].…”

“…The Comprehensive Health Seeking and Coping Paradigm (CHSCP) 15 served as the framework for the proposed study. This model has been successfully applied to investigations focusing on understanding HIV, Hepatitis B and C virus risk, and protective behaviors and other health outcomes among drug‐abusing, homeless, and impoverished adults 16‐20 and youth 21,22 . The CHSCP provides a foundation in exploring the importance of various cognitive and behavioral domains in relation to the selection of variables in this study; namely, sociodemographic variables, mental health, sexual activity, and risky drug and alcohol use.…”

“…In conclusion, MI was described as a promising tool for strategies for the promotion of health 42 and vaccination against Hepatitis A and B among patients undergoing methadone maintenance. 43 In the field of vaccination, only two studies used MI techniques to promote immunization among adults. 42,43 Although their results were promising, they were not significant, mostly because of the small sample size 43 and the specific targeted population (adults undergoing methadone maintenance treatment.…”
