Predictors of getting a residency interview: Differences by medical specialty

Abstract: Objectives: Gaining medical residency interviews has become more competitive and costly for medical students. Although limited evidence from residency programme directors indicates predictors for successfully matching into a programme, past research has not sufficiently explored the application components necessary to receive an interview offer. The present study will identify which application components are most helpful in obtaining interview offers for different medical specialties. Methods: Data were sourc… Show more

“…Considering these changes, students scrambled to fill their schedules to ensure timely graduation, hunted for virtual away rotations, and began preparing for virtual interviews. Prior to the pandemic, students often used away rotations to signal both interest in a program and geographical preference, which increased the likelihood of interview offers (Kremer et al 2020 ). However, without the ability to travel and rotate at other institutions, many students are concerned about how to signal these preferences.…”

“…Membership in AOA has been shown to be a noteworthy and valuable achievement for many medical students, with several studies showing that election to the honor society is associated with an increased likelihood of receiving a residency interview offer, matching into the student's preferred residency program, and pursuing a career in academic medicine. [2][3][4] In recent years, however, there have been growing concerns regarding equity in AOA selection, particularly for those underrepresented in medicine (URM), which is defined by the Association of American Medical Colleges as "those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." 5 Studies have shown that AOA membership is 6 times greater for White students than for Black students and 2 times greater for White students than for Asian students, despite controlling for relevant academic factors.…”
