Predictors of Cycling in College Students

Abstract: Abstract. Objectives: To: (1) assess cycling-related questions which have been added to the electronic version of the NCHA-ACHA II, (2) examine cycling prevalence; and (3) identify predictors of cycling in college students. Participants: Predominately female (69%), undergraduate (89%), and White (85%) students (N = 949) from a large, urban, northwestern, bicycle-friendly university completed the electronic version of the NCHA-ACHA II. Methods:Thirty cycling-related questions were added to the NCHA-ACHA II and … Show more

“…Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to identify the underlying essential structure of the environmental variables under consideration (T. A. Brown, 2015;Ogilvie, Mitchell, Mutrie, Petticrew, & Platt, 2008;Ransdell, Mason, Wuerzer, & Leung, 2013). Clustering by study site was accounted for in the EFA.…”

“…4 However, there is limited research on the factors associated with bicycling in the U.S. 59 Further, evidence suggests that factors associated with bicycling behavior differ depending on domain, recreation, or transportation. 1012 To date, domain-specific bicycling and correlates have not been examined in U.S. adults using nationally representative data.…”

“…Changing the built environment is the most common type of approach ( Kärmeniemi et al ., 2018 ; Smith et al ., 2017 ). Physically separating motorised traffic from cyclists and pedestrians (e.g., cycling lanes, widened pavements, traffic-free zones, and LTNs), installing zebra crossings, and providing safe parking spaces to minimise the risk of theft, vandalism, and weather damage have shown robust positive effects on active travel ( Aldred, 2016 ; Kärmeniemi et al ., 2018 ; Petrunoff et al ., 2017 ; Pooley et al ., 2013 ; Pucher & Buehler, 2008 ; Ransdell et al ., 2013 ; Smith et al ., 2017 ). For reviews of walking and cycling interventions and environmental determinants, see Aldred (2019) , Barnett et al .…”
