Predictors of Batterer Program Attendance

Abstract: Research and services to address premature termination from batterers' programs (BPs) are limited by arbitrary definitions of dropout and completion. A continuous measure was used to evaluate predictors of attendance by men in a BP. As part of a larger study, men (n = 220) completed measures of physical violence, prior arrests, and current psychological functioning; and women (n = 158) completed telephone interviews regarding their partner's violence and program continuance. Results indicate that BP clients at… Show more

“…Dergelijke daders vertonen nogal eens middelenmisbruik. Ze recidiveren sneller en stoppen eerder met een behandeling (Daly, Power & Gondolf, 2001 ;White & Gondolf, 2001). De pathologische variant van de vermijdende stijl is de zogenaamde cyclische partnermishandelaar (Dutton, Golant, & Pijnacker, 2000).…”

“…From a statistical perspective, it is always preferable to use the full range of a variable; thus, the number of sessions attended conveys more information than does "treatment completion," a variable that is somewhat arbitrary at best anyway (Buttell & Pike, 2002;Daly et al, 2001;McCloskey et al, 2003). However, in order to allow comparisons to other treatment studies, comparisons were also conducted on the basis of treatment completion, defined as attendance of at least 75% or greater.…”

“…However, as Gondolf (2001; has noted, attributing the reassault rate of men who never even attended a single session to that type of treatment is highly misleading. Moreover, programs are highly arbitrary in their definition of what constitutes a drop-out (Buttell & Pike, 2002;Daly et al, 2001;McCloskey et al, 2003). Therefore, whether the goal of the evaluation is to assess the effectiveness of treatment relative to no-treatment or whether the goal is to compare the effectiveness of two distinct types of treatment, it is essential to use a dose approach regarding treatment.…”
