Predictors of 25-hydroxyvitamin D status among individuals with metabolic syndrome: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: BackgroundThe risk of metabolic syndrome can be influenced by inadequate vitamin D levels, and exposure to sunlight is the main external source of vitamin D. The present study assessed the influence of environmental, biological, and nutritional factors in relation to seasonal 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentration in individuals with metabolic syndrome.MethodsThis cross-sectional study enrolled 180 individuals with metabolic syndrome aged between 18 and 80 years. The 25OHD concentration was considered the d… Show more

“…[ 44 ] Interestingly, recent studies found an association of ABSI and LBSIZ with sarcopenic obesity. [ 25 , 26 , 41 , 42 , 43 ] Our study also showed similar associations, namely that LBSIZ had a positive association with fat mass, and a negative association with muscle mass. Considering the fact that a high LBSIZ value means that an individual has a high proportion of abdominal fat and relatively little muscle mass, this result implies that LBSIZ, by overcoming the limitations of BMI, is a useful parameter to identify individuals at high risk of CVD in the MHO group.…”

“…Also, Brazil is a tropical country, with easier exposure to solar radiation. Therefore, higher VitD levels are expected when compared to most studies from around the world 33,34 .…”

“…Overweight and obesity cause other non-communicable diseases that affect the reserves of many nutrients (48)(49)(50)(51)(52) . Overweight and obesity lead to adverse metabolic effects on blood pressure, lipid profile, insulin resistance, low-grade inflammation, and, consequently worse prognosis for viral infections, and this seems to be the same for SARS-CoV-2 (2,12,13,15) .…”
