Predictors of 2-Year Drinking Outcomes in a Swedish Treatment Sample

Abstract: Background: Few studies have investigated predictors of short- and longer-term outcomes in relatively well functioning treatment samples. Methods: Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors of continuous abstinence in 188 individuals during their 2nd year after private 12-step treatment in Sweden, and findings are related to a previous report on 1-year outcomes. Results: Individual baseline characteristics were not directly related to 2nd year outcomes, while a higher 1st-year d… Show more

“…However, it has been demonstrated that short-term (e.g. 6 months) alcohol outcomes are good predictors for longer-term outcomes [19,34]. Given the nature of substance use disorders and the frequent prevalence of relapse after intensive treatment, it is important to incorporate psycho-education and relapse prevention in residential programs.…”

“…Among a sample of patients in SUD treatment from community, residential, and prison settings, satisfaction was associated with abstinence at 8 months post-intake (Morris & Gannon, 2008). Satisfaction with 12-step oriented treatment in a private, mostly residential setting was also associated with alcohol abstinence at a 2-year follow up (Bodin & Romelsjö, 2007). Substance abuse treatment patients who reported high levels of satisfaction with access and with effectiveness tended to have more hours in treatment, attend more self-help groups, and have a greater likelihood of abstinence at 1 year (Carlson & Gabriel, 2001).…”

“…It is well known that treatment response is not influenced by treatment alone [16]. A number of effect moderators of alcohol treatment outcomes have been identified [17].…”

“…These include clients’ baseline sociodemographics, within-treatment variables such as treatment fidelity, and posttreatment factors like social support for curbing drinking activities [18]. Prediction studies have provided a limited number of consistently identified baseline predictors of treatment outcome, including readiness to change problematic alcohol use [19,20,21], self-efficacy [19,20,22], and severity of alcohol use [4,16]. The milestone study by Project MATCH [19] is the best known example.…”
