Predictors and consequences of health anxiety symptoms: a novel twin modeling study

Abstract: Obsessional thoughts, body dysmorphic concerns, and social anxiety symptoms may have a causal influence on HA. To report physical/somatic anxiety appears to be a consequence of the underlying presence of HA-related fears. Should our results be confirmed by longitudinal studies, the evaluation and treatment of HA may benefit from the consideration of these identified risk factors.

“…This thought can lead to overall tension in the body, muscle stiffness, increased blood pressure and other physiological consequences connected to increased cortisol and amylase levels [6]. Being under stress may be expressed by physiological symptoms such as stress, trembling, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat [7]. The longer individuals are in this state, the worse the consequences for cognitive abilities are.…”

“…We explored the causal inference between SES and obesity using Inference about Causation through Examination of FAmiliaL CONfounding (ICE FALCON), a statistical modeling approach used to obtain observational data for related individuals, particularly twin pairs (24‐27). ICE FALCON makes causal inference using the familial similarity of an exposure, which has similarities with bidirectional Mendelian randomization (28).…”

“…Health anxiety (HA) is marked by worry or belief that one has contracted a life-threatening illness. An Australian twin study was conducted to assess the nature of the relationship between HA and anxiety and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (López-Solà et al, 2018). Participants were volunteer MZ twins enrolled in the Australian Twin Registry — 3,100 twins received a questionnaire by mail, with follow-up recruitment by telephone.…”
