Predictive Value of Red Blood Cell Distribution Width in Poststroke Depression

Abstract: Purpose. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is increased in a variety of inflammatory-related diseases. However, there is no report of its clinical significance in poststroke depression (PSD). This study explores the clinical significance of RDW in PSD patients. Methods. A total of 185 patients with first-ever acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) in the Second Hospital of Anhui Medical University were chosen as subjects. A retrospective observational study was conducted from February 2019 to February 2020. PSD pa… Show more

“…This result supports our findings. Dai et al (2021) also discovered that RDW-SD was positively correlated with the score for depressive symptoms, which may predict post-stroke depressive symptoms in stroke patients. This implies that RDW can be used as a biomarker of inflammation-related processes (Dai et al, 2021), and an inflammation index may be an important predictor of depressive symptoms.…”

In view of its simplicity, low cost, and accessibility, RDW might serve as a marker for the early identification of depressive symptoms in patients with HF.…”

“…Depression has become the second largest disease burden after ischemic heart disease. In the suicide population, 40% of people die because of depression without timely and systematic treatment [ 5 7 ]. Therefore, how to distinguish whether patients suffer from depression is particularly important.…”
