Predictive Value of Plasma MicroRNA-216a/b in the Diagnosis of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a common human malignancy with poor survival, which was usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a class of single stranded noncoding RNAs with only 17–25 ribonucleotides, were demonstrated to play an important role in lots of cancers. In the recent years, increasing evidence revealed that circulating miRNAs exhibited great potential in the diagnosis of various types of cancers. The present study was designed to evaluate the diagnostic value of pl… Show more

“…Accumulative evidences suggested the close involvement of miR-216b in diverse human malignancies. For instance, Dong et al [2016] proposed the predictive value of plasma miR-216a/b in the diagnosis of oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Dluzen et al (2016) demonstrated the important role of miR-216b-5p in liver cancer cell lines via regulation of UGT2B expression and activity.…”

“…In particular, published studies have demonstrated that dysregulated miRNA patterns (upregulation and/or downregulation) contribute to tumor initiation and progression in various malignancies via the modulation of target genes involved in proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, invasion, and migration 5,6. In addition, from a clinical practice perspective, the value of miRNAs as diagnostic and prognostic markers has been revealed in recent years 7,8…”

“…Moreover, our findings showed less expression of hsa-miR-216 in achalasia. Reduced expression of miR-216 has also been shown in other diseases, such as nonsmall cell lung cancer [31], ESCC [32], nasopharyngeal carcinoma [33] and hepatocellular carcinoma [34]. Down-regulation of miR-217 and miR-216 that act as tumor suppressors, may also explain the high risk of esophageal cancer in achalasia patients.…”
