Predictive value of miR-9 as a potential biomarker for nasopharyngeal carcinoma metastasis

Abstract: Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has a distinctive geographic distribution and is characterised by its strong tendency of metastasis. We aimed to examine the microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles in plasma samples of NPC patients to explore their clinical significance in disease development and progression.

“…This result is consistent with that of Gourzones et al, [25] suggesting that circulating EBV-encoded miRNA can be used as serological markers in the absence of circulating EBV-DNA. Only Lu et al [27] compared specific miRNA levels between loco-regional and metastasis samples, and demonstrated a high sensitivity (73.7%) and specificity (74.2%) along with a high AUC value (0.743). These results may serve as references for future works to investigate the specific functions of circulating miRNA in distinguishing the different stages of NPC.…”

“…Basing on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we included seven publications that contain nine studies on the diagnostic accuracy of circulating miRNA in NPC patients. [23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30] The flow of search strategy is shown in Figure 1. Table 1 lists the characteristics of the seven publications that compared circulating miRNA expression between NPC patients and healthy individuals.…”

“…Another moderately well studied miRNA in the context of NPC is miR-9. Not only has miR-9 been identified as a potential circulating biomarker of advanced NPC [31] , several potential targets and functions of miR-9 have also been reported. Recently, two studies describing putative tumor suppressive mechanisms for miR-9 in NPC have been published [32,33] .…”
