Predictive role of neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and mean platelet volume in Henoch-Schönlein purpura related gastrointestinal and renal involvement

Abstract: Background: Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is a systemic small-vessel vasculitis that occurs mainly in children. The aim was to evaluate the blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with HSP and to investigate the relationship with gastrointestinal and renal involvement. Methods: Children with HSP and healthy individuals as controls were included. Hemoglobin level, white blood cell count, platelet count, NLR, MPV erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein… Show more

“… 15 Other studies also reported that NLR was increased in HSP patients with organ involvement compared to patients without organ involvement. 16 , 17 In the present study, NLR was found to be a predictive index for renal involvement in HSP, while PLR was not found to be statistically different between HSP and HSPN.…”

“…At disease onset, nephritis occurred from 20 to 80% of HSP patients, as observed herein (40%) [ 1 ]. According to previous studies, in 75–100% of patients, renal involvement develops within 4–6 weeks of the onset of the rash, and in almost all patients within the first 90 days [ 5 ]. In our patients, renal involvement was detected within 30 days from disease onset in 72% of patients, and within 6 months in 91%.…”

“…Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), nowadays called immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis, is the most common systemic vasculitis in pediatric age, with an annual incidence of 10–20 per 100,000 [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. More than 90% of patients are younger than 10 years old and most HSP patients’ age is between 4 and 6 years [ 3 , 6 ].…”

“…NLR has been widely used to define the severity of inflammation 21 . Yakut et al (2020) 22 demonstrated that HSP patients with gastrointestinal bleeding had significantly higher NLR than those without gastrointestinal bleeding. Ozturk et al (2016) 23 also concluded that high NLR is related to gastrointestinal bleeding and renal involvement.…”
