Background: There are limited studies on the prevalence of and risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MetS) in people aged ‡50 years. This study investigated the sociodemographic and health characteristics related to MetS prevalence in men and women aged ‡50 years to assess clustering of risk factors. Methods: This study used the 2016 survey data of 2927 people aged 50-79 years who were administered questionnaires and underwent examinations. Participants were divided into adults aged 50-64 and 65-79 years and further into four subgroups, according to sex. Differences in sociodemographic and health characteristics by sex were verified using the chi-squared test. Complex sample logistic regression analysis was performed to verify factors related to MetS. Results: The sociodemographic characteristics associated with MetS in men and women aged 50-64 years, included living without a spouse, having a middle school education or less, and reporting a low economic status. The health characteristics associated with MetS in men aged 50-64 years were current smoking status and strength training <2 times/week. The sociodemographic characteristic associated with MetS in women aged 65-79 years was living without a spouse. Hypertriglyceridemia was the risk factor most associated with MetS prevalence. Conclusions: Among men and women aged 50-64 years, living without a spouse, having a low education level, and reporting a low economic status were associated with MetS prevalence. Current smoking status and strength training <2 times/week for men and living without a spouse for women aged 65-79 years were associated with MetS.

A Path Analysis of Factors Influencing Health-related Quality of Life among Male Adults

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to analyze factors influencing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among male adults. Methods: Participants were 196 male adults who were recruited from June to July 2016. Seven variables related to HRQoL including age, perceived stress, physical activities, problem drinking, social support, self-esteem, depression were measured. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program and Amos 18.0 for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients and path analysis. Results: The mean for HRQoL was 80.14. The path analysis showed that depression had the greatest direct effect on HRQoL. It was found that perceived stress had direct and total effects on HRQoL. It also mediated the paths of social support and self-esteem to HRQoL. These factors account for 68% of the total variance, and the fit indices of the model satisfied the criteria of fitness. Conclusion:The results indicate that these factors influencing HRQoL should be considered when developing programs to improve HRQoL for male adults.

Background: This study was conducted to identify the factors that affect the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of middle-aged men with metabolic syndrome (MetS) based on their stress level using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods: The participants of this study were men aged between 40-64 with MetS who were included in the KNHANES. The main variables of this study were HRQoL, which was measured using the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D); general characteristics, health-related characteristics, and dietary behaviors. Results: The subjective health of the group with less stress was significantly better. Compared to the unhealthy group, the groups perceived as healthy and normal had a higher HRQoL. The economic level, suicidal ideation, and dinner arrangement (presence of family) of the stressed group were significantly associated with their HRQoL. Compared to a low economic level, the high and middle economic levels were more associated with the subjects' HRQoL. Compared to the group without suicidal ideation, the group that experienced suicidal association had a lower HRQoL. Compared to the group that did not dine with their family, the group that dined with family had a higher HRQoL. Conclusions: The results of this study expand the scientific understanding of HRQoL based on stress among middle-aged men with metabolic syndrome. Since differences in the influence of the factors that affect HRQoL were identified based on the level of stress experienced, the stress level of middle-aged men should be considered when devising an intervention strategy to improve their HRQoL.
