Prediction Power of Logistic Regression (LR) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) Models in Exploring Driving Forces of Urban Expansion to Be Sustainable in Estonia

Abstract: Estonia mainly experienced urban expansion after regaining independence in 1991. Employing the CORINE Land Cover dataset to analyze the dynamic changes in land use/land cover (LULC) in Estonia over 28 years revealed that urban land increased by 33.96% in Harju County and by 19.50% in Tartu County. Therefore, after three decades of LULC changes, the large number of shifts from agricultural and forest land to urban ones in an unplanned manner have become of great concern. To this end, understanding how LULC chan… Show more

“…Integration of CA with other statistical and geospatial models can enhance the CA model's predictability [3,75]. Commonly used reinforcement methods are the LR model [88,89], Markov chain analysis (MCA) [90,91], agent-based model [92,93] and ANNs [2,86].…”

“…These changes were primarily driven by land reforms in 1940, 1949 (collectivisation and deportations), and 1989, as well as urbanisation and concentrated agricultural production [58]. Since Estonia regained independence in 1991, the country has experienced urban expansion, and it has observed a 34% increase in urban land in Harku since 1993 (Figure 2a-d) [59]. As the country underwent economic and political transformations, the liberalisation of land ownership and the transition to a market economy led to increased urbanisation and population movement towards the fringes of the city.…”
