Prediction of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) outcome by pre- and postinterventional 13C-methacetin breath test

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Liver function is one of the most important parameters for the outcome of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE). The Liver Maximum Capacity (LiMAx) -Test is a bedside test that provides a real-time option for liver function testing. The objective of this pilot study is to investigate the suitability of the LiMAX test for estimating the TACE outcome. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: 20 patients with intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) received a LiMAx test 24 h pre and post TACE. In addition, l… Show more

“…In this context, it is important to assess the liver function of the remnant before surgery to avoid postoperative liver failure (PHLF). These scoring systems are also used in locoregional therapies to assess liver function 27 , 28 . In addition, the MELD and CP scores are part of the strategies for prognosis prediction and treatment recommendation for HCC, such as the BCLC strategy or that of the Japan Society of Hepatology (JSH).…”

“…Three recent studies evaluated the value of 13 C-MBT in TACE-treated patients with HCC ( 21 23 ). However, none of these studies investigated the association of baseline and longitudinal 13 C-MBT values with prognosis and mortality prediction.…”

“…Senk et al performed 13 C-MBT 1 day before and after TACE in 20 patients with HCC. Patients with an objective response or disease control according to modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (mRECIST) 6 weeks after TACE showed significantly higher baseline 13 C-MBT values, respectively ( 23 ).…”

“…This tool is potentially suitable to select candidates for liver surgery or liver transplantation and to predict the post-operative outcome [ 29 , 30 , 31 ]. Recent studies in small patient populations also showed that LiMAx might be an appropriate monitoring tool to predict the risk of liver failure after TACE [ 32 , 33 , 34 ].…”
