Prediction of Maximal Oxygen Uptake by Six-Minute Walk Test and Body Mass Index in Healthy Boys

Abstract: This study provides a relatively accurate and convenient VO2max prediction equation based on the 6MWT and body mass index in healthy boys. This model can be used for evaluation of cardiorespiratory fitness of boys in different settings.

“…Submaximal exercise testing, such as walking tests may provide safe, practical means of assessing functional status, 1 monitoring treatment 2,3 and establishing prognosis 4,5 . The 6‐minute walk test (6MWT) has shown good validity and reliability 6,7 . It is considered a highly relevant test that reflects the physical activities of daily living, 8 as well as cardiopulmonary fitness in both healthy children 4 and children with various diseases 8 .…”

“…V′ O 2 peak may be defined as the maximum capacity to uptake and transport oxygen in the pulmonary and cardiovascular system, and of the capacity of the exercising muscles to utilise oxygen. When performing a direct measurement of V′ O 2 peak , the test must be conducted using a treadmill or a cycle ergometer, but V′ O 2 peak can also be estimated from field tests like the 6MWT [42]. In CF, V′ O 2 peak is significantly correlated with survival and quality of life leading to recommendations that it should be part of the annual assessment [43].…”
