Prediction of Gestational Age in Osmanabadi Goats by Ultrasonic Measurement of Crown-Rump Length

Abstract: The objective of this study was to predict gestational age of Osmanabadi goats by realtime ultrasonography using measurements of Crown Rump Length (CRL). CRL was measured in 15 Osmanabadi goats, by transabdominal ultrasonography carried out on days 35, 42, 49, 56, 63 and 70 of gestation, those became pregnant after oestrus detection and natural mating following oestrus synchronization in 30 does using double PGF2α injections 11 days apart. Gestational age was calculated by using gestational equations derived f… Show more

“…A strong positive correlation ( R 2 = 0.92; 0.94; 0.94) and low standard error of estimate (SEE 2.62; 2.29; 2.29) were established between gestational age and CRL during the first third of pregnancy. Our data were in line with those of other research teams (Abdelghafar et al, ; Amer, ; Karen et al, ; Patil et al, ) affirming also a close relationship. In our belief, CRL could not be precisely determined during second and third trimester due to embryo's growth and the impossibility of ultrasound's scanner to encompass its actual size.…”

“…Numerous studies (Abdelghafar, Ahmed, Ibrahim, & Mantis, 2011;Amer, 2010;Lee et al, 2005;Patil, Sahatpure, Patil, Kumar, & Sharma, 2016;Suguna et al, 2008) have used ultrasound for the determination of gestational age in goats through the measurement of dimensions of various foetal and maternal structures. Substantial breed-related differences in the period of visualization of the different biometric parameters, structure size and correlation to gestational age were also reported.…”
