The global ecological decline resulting from urban development presents a significant challenge for numerous regions striving to reconcile conservation efforts with developmental needs. This study explores the relationship between ecosystem service value (ESV) and habitat quality (HQ) under various scenarios to elucidate prospective development trajectories. This study utilized the PLUS model to simulate land use patterns in the Chengdu metropolitan area across four distinct development scenarios. Furthermore, it employed the equivalent factor method and the Invest model to quantify ESV and HQ values, and investigated the coupling coordination between ESV and HQ for each city using a coupling coordination model (CCM). The findings are as follows: (1) Between 2000 and 2020, land use in the Chengdu metropolitan area primarily expanded through the development of construction land. (2) Concurrently, ESV demonstrated a fluctuating trend characterized by an initial decline succeeded by an upsurge, culminating under the Development–Ecological Balance Scenario. Likewise, HQ displayed a similar fluctuating pattern with an initial decline succeeded by an increase, reaching its zenith under the Ecological Dominance Scenario. (3) The coupling coordination between ESV and HQ exhibited variability across cities and scenarios. Ultimately, this study offers a distinctive perspective on evaluating the interplay between urban development and conservation, providing valuable insights for promoting sustainable development in other regions.

It is of great significance for scientific land use planning and ecological security protection to clarify the impacts of land use changes on an ecosystem’s health. Based on the dynamic evolution of land use and ecosystem health on the Northern Slope of Tianshan Mountain (NSTM) from 2000 to 2020, this study utilized the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model, the Vitality–Organization–Resilience–Services (VORS) model, and the elasticity approach to assess the impacts of land use changes on ecosystem health under four different scenarios: Natural Development Scenario (ND), Farmland Conservation Priority Scenario (FP), Ecological Conservation Priority Scenario (EP), and Urban Development Priority Scenario (UD). The results indicate that (1) land use on the NSTM from 2000 to 2020 was predominantly characterized by barren land and grassland. (2) The overall level of ecosystem health on the NSTM was poor from 2000 to 2020 but showed a gradual improvement trend. (3) Ecosystem health levels vary greatly across scenarios. In general, ecosystem health improves under FP and EP scenarios but deteriorates significantly under ND and UD scenarios. The resilience of ecosystem health varies significantly across different land categories. In the future, optimizing the current land use pattern and refining the ecological protection policy are essential to enhance ecosystem health and services in the NSTM.

Evaluation and Influential Factors of Urban Land Use Efficiency in Yangtze River Economic Belt

The study of urban land use efficiency is of great significance for optimizing the spatial allocation of urban land, thereby promoting the intensive use of urban land and the transformation of economic development modes. Taking the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) as the study object, we chose the undesirable Slacks-Based Measure (SBM) model to calculate the urban land use efficiency (ULUE). Then, we utilized the spatial correlation analysis and econometric methods to discuss its spatio-temporal features and influential factors. The results show the following: (1) The urban land use efficiency in the YREB steadily improved from 2010 to 2022, but the inter-regional efficiency gap evidently increased. (2) There is an efficiency value to be found in a multi-center network structure, and it forms a “core-periphery” distribution pattern. The high-efficiency areas in the downstream and upstream regions of the YREB are gradually increasing, while the efficiency value in the midstream area remains low. (3) The urban efficiency values have strong correlation, and they are mainly “High-High agglomeration” and “Low-Low agglomeration”, and they show significant regional characteristics. (4) The economic level, industrial structure, and urbanization have obvious motivating effects on ULUE, and the positive spatial spillover effect is clear. The foreign direct investment and land finance hinder the boost of efficiency, and the latter has a negative spatial spillover role on the ULUE in the downstream cities.
