Prediction of Body Mass Index Using Concurrently Self-Reported or Previously Measured Height and Weight

Abstract: ObjectiveTo compare alternative models for the imputation of BMIM (measured weight in kilograms/measured height in meters squared) in a longitudinal study.MethodsWe used data from 11,008 adults examined at wave III (2001–2002) and wave IV (2007–2008) in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Participants were asked their height and weight before being measured. Equations to predict wave IV BMIM were developed in an 80% random subsample and evaluated in the remaining participants. The va… Show more

“…Although, BMI is significantly correlated with the amount of fat mass, measured with standard method, in the general population, the index loses predictability in the individual. Thus, individuals with the same BMI may have a significantly different fat mass [75]. The index, not including sex and age, tends to overestimate fat in young people and to underestimate it in the elderly.…”

“…Participant’s self-reported height at baseline was a valid method for evaluating BMI. 27,28 PWL from baseline weight was calculated at mid- and end-of-treatment for use in analyses.…”

“…The size of the relationship, however, is negligible. It thus appears that age at menarche is not a good predictor of future body fat in Indonesia and possibly other developing countries [15].…”
