Prediction of a small internal jugular vein by external jugular vein diameter

Abstract: SummaryThe relationship between internal jugular vein diameter as measured with an ultrasound imaging machine (SiteRite, Dymax) and external jugular vein diameter was studied in 50 anaesthetised patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery. There was an inverse correlation between external jugular vein diameter and internal jugular vein diameter (r = -0.47, p < 0.001). All patients with an external jugular vein diameter of 7 mm or greater had an internal jugular vein diameter of less than 15 mm. No patient wit… Show more

“…There may be diagnostic problems in pediatric patients who present with phlebectasia mimicking other neck masses [5,6]. In the literature, there are many studies about the sizes and cross-sectional area of the IJV, aiming at guiding both the interventional medical procedures and also the diagnosis of vascular pathologies like phlebectesia [1,2,[7][8][9][10]. Mortensen et al [1] measured the cross-sectional internal diameters of IJVs in a study they performed in cervical and femoral vessels.…”

“…The average diameter of the EJV is 9.3 mm, and it has an inversely proportional relationship with the size of the IJV 12 . This is one of the reasons we prefer to dissect it when it is visible.…”

“…IJV cannulation is the preferred route for central venous access for many clinicians as it is simple to perform and has few complications [4]. Despite the fact that many techniques can be used, success rate is higher when the IJV is as large as possible [4][5][6]. For this reason, an appropriate method to study the anatomic dimensions of the IJV in vivo could be useful in order to choose the more favorable side.…”
