Predicting the Segment-Based Effects of Heterogeneous Traffic and Road Geometric Features on Fatal Accidents

Abstract: Inter-urban roads in Indonesia are characterized mainly by distinct road geometry and heterogeneous traffic features. The accident database from the Republic of Indonesia National Traffic Police recorded a substantial number of fatal accidents and fatalities along inter-urban roads. This study aimed to analyze the effects of traffic heterogeneity and road geometry features on fatal accidents along inter-urban roads in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Segment-based accident analysis was adopted to minimize bias due t… Show more

“…We have found that straight sections were associated with black spots. This result is consistent with that of [14] who demonstrated that straight segments were found to be more likely to increase the number of fatal accidents than curves. Also, the results of [19] showed that the straight road segment is a fatal accident risk factor.…”

“…According to [1], road traffic accidents claim approximately 1.19 million lives annually worldwide. To mitigate the frequency of traffic accidents, academic and industrial communities are increasingly investing in the analysis of accident-related factors using real-world data [2][3][4], predicting hazardous conditions in advance [5], and employing vehicle connectivity and automation technologies for real-time vehicle motion optimization [6].…”

“…Trafic safety and management has attracted many researchers to conduct various studies and analysis for improved safety and efficiency (Trapsilawati et al, 2023;Siregar et al, 2022;Sumaryo et al, 2019). Unsignalized intersections play a crucial role in the transportation network, and understanding the traffic flow and behavior at these intersections is essential for effective traffic management and planning.…”
