Predicting the possibility of African horse sickness (AHS) introduction into China using spatial risk analysis and habitat connectivity of Culicoides

Abstract: African horse sickness (AHS) is a devastating equine infectious disease. On 17 March 2020, it first appeared in Thailand and threatened all the South-East Asia equine industry security. Therefore, it is imperative to carry out risk warnings of the AHS in China. The maximum entropy algorithm was used to model AHS and Culicoides separately by using climate and non-climate variables. The least cost path (LCP) method was used to analyze the habitat connectivity of Culicoides with the reclassified land cover and al… Show more

“…China's cross-border trade is developing at a fast pace, but the constraints of real factors such as capital, scale, and management level directly lead to the dilemma that Chinese cross-border e-merchants generally face high costs in the settlement link, poor timeliness, and difficulty in repayment [3]. While being highly valued, the instability and high failure rate of alliances make enterprises have to weigh the benefits and risks when joining them [4]. In addition, the lack of sufficient funds to build a modern information management system has led to "indigestion" and order loss in most logistics enterprises from time to time.…”

“…We filtered the presence points using the SDM Toolbox v1.1c [ 26 ] integrated in ArcGIS 10.6 to minimize potential spatial autocorrelation [ 27 ]. Filtering was performed by limiting the minimum distance between each pair of occurrence points at 10 km [ 28 , 29 ]. This helped to address problems associated with spatial sampling biases.…”

“…It is likely that the range overlap of competent Palearctic species of Culicoides with C. imicola facilitated the novel vector-pathogen interaction in the case of BTV, and there is no reason to suggest that this would not happen with AHSV as well. This concern has prompted many publications to review and assess the risk of AHS spread to disease-free regions (Thompson et al 2012, Robin et al 2016, Gao et al 2022, Grewar et al 2021, Nelson et al 2022, Starešina et al 2022).…”
