Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe relation between the meaning in life and depression, hopelessness, and suicide risk in a sample of Spanish Borderline Personality Disorder patients is analyzed. The hypothesis suggested that meaning in life is a significant negative predictor of these variables. “…Inverse associations were also reported between MiL and suicidal tendency or suicidal potential (a measure accounting for depression, anxiety, and emotional state) [33,36,38] and between MiL and suicide risk (taking into account general suicide risk factors) [46].…”

“…Low meaning in life was associated with more suicidal ideation and attempts, and hopelessness was also positively associated with suicidal behaviours [68,107,121,122,136]. Low meaning in life predicted hopelessness [72], and meaning in life also moderated the relationship between previous suicide attempts and hopelessness [92]. One study found that hopelessness mediated the relationship between BPD and suicide attempts [64].…”

“…Depression was found to predict hopelessness for people with BPD, and was mediated by a sense of meaning in life [90]. Low meaning in life was correlated with feelings of both hopelessness and depression [91] and predicted both depression and hopelessness [72]. One study found people with comorbid BPD and MDD had more severe hopelessness compared to people with MDD only [46], and people with BPD had higher ratings of depression and hopelessness than people with depressive disorders [69].…”

“…In fact, a great number of studies show the relationship between MiL and several measures of mental health and positive cognitive-emotional functioning (Ho, Cheung, & Cheung, 2010). Also, a low level of MiL is related to hopelessness, depression, substance dependence, self-injury behaviors, and suicide, among others (García-Alandete, Marco, & Pérez, 2014;Kleiman & Beaver, 2013). In the same way, several studies show a negative relationship between MiL and psychological disorders, and positive relationship between MiL and mental health, psychosocial functioning, optimism, life satisfaction, disease acceptance, and PWB in pre-adolescents and adolescents (Brassai, Piko, & Steger, 2011;Mulders, 2011;Rathi & Rastogi, 2007), adult and older people (Burrow, Sumner, & Ong, 2014;Grouden & Jose, 2015;Krause & Hayward, 2014), teachers (Damásio, de Melo, & da Silva, 2013), cancer patients (Scrignaro et al, 2015), chronic pain patients (Dezutter, Luyckx, & Wachholtz, 2015), nursing-home patients (Gorill, 2013;Haugan, 2014).…”
