Predicting risk of dyslexia with an online gamified test

Abstract: Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder related to school failure. Detection is both crucial and challenging, especially in languages with transparent orthographies, such as Spanish. To make detecting dyslexia easier, we designed an online gamified test and a predictive machine learning model. In a study with more than 3,600 participants, our model correctly detected over 80% of the participants with dyslexia. To check the robustness of the method we tested our method using a new data set with over 1,300 part… Show more

“…Gamification designs the game play of games with game elements to engage and motivate users (Rouse, 2004;Rauschenberger et al, 2019c). Games are developed to screen readers (Rello et al, 2020(Rello et al, , 2018 using linguistic content and to screen pre-readers (Gaggi et al, 2017;Geurts et al, 2015;Rauschenberger et al, 2019aRauschenberger et al, , 2018a focusing on the gameful experience. Apart from our own work (Rauschenberger et al, 2020) only Lexa (Poole et al, 2018) published an accuracy (89.2%) using features related to phonological processing.…”

“…The main assumption behind our approach is that users should use their device as they normally would in order to understand their usage patterns and receive recommendations for accessibility features. This diferentiates our work from past work on, e.g., digital games specifcally designed to detect dyslexia [38,40] or autism [44], and wizards that explicitly ask users to describe their accessibility needs. Therefore, our approach may not be able to recommend some accessibility features to a subset of users.…”
