Predicting Perceived Sport Performance via Self-Determination Theory

Abstract: Sport performance depends in part on psychological factors. Self-determination theory emphasizes that the satisfisfaction of basic psychological needs and autonomous motivation may be linked to positive behavioral results and positive perceptions of performance. Our main objective in this study was to analyze the predictive power of such variables as perceived autonomy support, the satisfaction of psychological needs, and autonomous motivation on perceived sport performance. We recruited 447 young Portuguese a… Show more

“…Moreover, autonomously motivated behavior tends to be sustained over time because a person engages in it for its own sake, whereas people motivated by external rewards experience difficulties initiating the behavior change and sustaining it over time. 15 , 25 , 26 Therefore, our results support the evidence that need satisfaction promotes positive vaccination behavior. Moreover, need frustration that is correlated with external motivation might negatively affect vaccination behavior over an extended period of time.…”

“…The theory has earned international and multidisciplinary recognition for the study of human motivation. It is being used to understand motivational aspects in higher education [3], tourism [6], and sport [27]. In the context of education, SDT has been implemented in a variety of ecosystems, including universities [7], medical schools [28], AI education [11], and teacher innovation [29].…”

“…In addition, the hypothesis was based on the self-determination theory (SDT; Deci and Ryan, 2000 ) that provides theoretical framework for understanding potential differences in induced psychological outcomes (i.e., perceived exertion and enjoyment) between SSG and HIT. In brief, it is known that stimulating environmental factors can facilitate the satisfaction of the three basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence and relatedness) and when they are met they increase self-determined (autonomous), intrinsic motivation, which in turn positively affects perceived effort and enjoyment response ( Deci and Ryan, 2000 ; Sarrazin et al, 2002 ; Pope and Wilson, 2012 ; Sheldon et al, 2013 ; Monteiro et al, 2018 ; Lourenço et al, 2022 ).…”
