Predicting medical tourism behavioural intention using social cognition models

Abstract: Purpose Few studies have adopted social psychology theories to understand the medical tourism decision-making process. The purpose of this study is to fill the said gap by suggesting the adoption of two social cognition models: the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and protection motivation theory (PMT), to predict medical tourism behavioural intention, as well as compare their predictive power by integrating TBP and PMT in a single model. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative method has been adopted. T… Show more

“…Recently, it has been possible to confirm, through a longitudinal study, that the sense of prediction places self-determined motivation as a temporal antecedent of the factors of social cognition, showing greater effects in this sense if compared to its opposite distribution [ 51 ]. On the other hand, factors shaping social cognition significantly and positively predicted the intention to follow a healthy diet, which reinforces previous findings [ 52 , 53 ].…”

“…is study pioneers the application of the Bayesian BWM-grey PROMETHEE-AL model to discuss the development performance of MT. While most prior studies applied statistics and qualitative researches (e.g., structural equation modeling (SEM) [34], grounded theory approach [4], and social cognition models [35]) to evaluate the development performance of MT, we provide an alternative tool to explore the performance evaluation of MT.…”

“…As it can effectively predict individuals' intentions, the TPB has been commonly applied to the prediction of diverse intentions in the context of tourism (Shen and Shen, 2020), such as tourists' intention to revisit a location (Huang et al , 2019), pro-environmental behavior (Wang and Wong, 2020), medical tourism (Seow et al , 2020) and residents' intentions to support tourism (Erul et al , 2020). However, few studies have adopted this model in studying Chinese residents' outbound travel intentions in the context of a pandemic.…”
