Abstract: Falls risk prediction is a particularly complex patient safety issue. Clinicians need to be aware of the limitations of their tool used to predict falls.

“…As such, there is no one definitive approach. Perhaps a combination of methods that examine the utility and predictive validity of individual risk factors should be considered (McKechnie, Pryor, et al., ). The rigour of the SFRST has been enhanced by: (i) the development of the SFRST incorporated a combination of different research studies; (ii) the current multisite prospective cohort study examined the predictive significance and utility of risk factors; and (iii) risk factor items for inclusion in the SFRST were identified using multiple regression modelling techniques.…”

“…Improving SFRST's utility and replicability (McKechnie, Pryor, et al., ; Papaioannou et al., ), all items in the SFRST are clinically relevant and readily identifiable by clinical staff with no additional training. Patient information regarding these items is routinely collected and documented as part of a nurse's clinical practice.…”
