Predicting Entrepreneurial Career Intentions

Abstract: Integrating predictions from the theory of human values with the theory of planned behavior (TPB), our primary goal is to investigate mechanisms through which individual values are related to entrepreneurial career intentions using a sample of 823 students from four European countries. We find that openness and self-enhancement values relate positively to entrepreneurial career intentions and that these relationships are partly mediated by attitudes toward entrepreneurship, self-efficacy, and, to a lesser exte… Show more

“…Profiles of values have not been studied systematically yet, but some studies point to the usefulness of this direction. For example, recent studies indicate that students' entrepreneurial intentions are best predicted by the value profile that combines an emphasis on openness to change and self enhancement values (Hirschi & Fischer, 2013;Gorgievski, Stephan, Laguna, © 2018 International Association of Applied Psychology. & Moriano, 2018).…”

“…Entrepreneurial intentions based on individual ideas and the opportunity to start a business (Shapero & Sokol, 1982). Literature indicates that attitude is essential in explaining individuals' intention (Esfandiar et al, 2019;Gorgievski, Stephan, Laguna, & Moriano, 2018). CPEC provides several business opportunities for an individual in different sectors such as construction, property, and manufacturing industries (Maqsood, 2018;Raza et al, 2018;Tong, 2015).…”

“…CPEC provides several business opportunities for an individual in different sectors such as construction, property, and manufacturing industries (Maqsood, 2018;Raza et al, 2018;Tong, 2015). Scholars suggested that individual attitude will be changed by benefits, which subsequently create entrepreneurial intention (Al-Jubari, Hassan, & Liñán, 2018;Esfandiar et al, 2019;Gorgievski et al, 2018).…”

“…It predicts that entrepreneurial behavior will be based on individual's intentions which are themselves determined by attitudes, social norms and perceived behavior control/self-efficacy beliefs (Ajzen, 1991). In turn, sociodemographic characteristics (Lakovleva, Kolvereid, & Stephan, 2011), personality traits (Karimi et al, 2017) and personal preferences such as values (Gorgievski, Stephan, Laguna, & Moriano, 2017) impact entrepreneurial career choice indirectly through their influence on attitudes, social norms and self-efficacy. Research has shown that the TPB predicts future entrepreneurial behavior in longitudinal studies (albeit in developed economies, Kolvereid & Isaksen, 2006;Van Gelderen, Kautonen, & Fink, 2015) and TPB is also supported by experimental evidence in other domains (Webb & Sheeran, 2006).…”
