Headlight use around dawn, midday and dusk on city and rural roads, as well as freeways, and when the weather was clear, cloudy and rainy was measured. The percentage of 14,220 vehicles using headlights, parking lights only, or no lights was recorded, as was ambient lighting. Direction of travel (into the sun vs. away from it) as a factor affecting headlight use was evaluated. The need for an automatic warning advising drivers to turn on headlights at critical combinations of ambient lighting, road speed, and windshield wiper use is discussed.
