Predicting developmental outcomes in very preterm infants: validity of a neonatal neurobehavioral assessment

Abstract: We found little evidence of the utility of the NAPI as a measure of short-term neurobehavioural function or for predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in very preterm infants. It may have greater predictive power when used serially to detect delayed neurobehavioural maturation.

“…In-depth studies [26][27][28] are in progress to better predict neurodevelopmental outcomes in this vulnerable population. The objective of this study was to evaluate correlations between brain MR imaging measurements taken at termequivalent age before discharge from the NICU and the neurodevelopmental outcome at 2 years' corrected age among very low-birth-weight infants.…”

“…44,46 Specificity/sensitivity approaches appear to be more common in studies evaluating the validity of neonatal assessment for later motor and cognitive impairments. 4,13,15 As such, there may be some benefit in applying sensitivity/specificity approaches to similarly evaluate the prognostic accuracy of neonatal screening for socio-emotional outcomes.…”
