Predicting airflow distribution and contaminant transport in aircraft cabins with a simplified gasper model

Abstract: This study investigated the air distribution and contaminant transport in aircraft cabins with gaspers by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). If the detailed gasper geometry were used in the CFD simulations, the grid number would be unacceptably high. To reduce the grid number, this investigation proposed a method for simplifying the gasper geometry. The method was then validated by two sets of experimental data obtained from a cabin mockup and a real aircraft cabin. It was found that for the cabin mocku… Show more

“…According to one of our previous studies, gasper-induced airflow has mixed effects on cabin air quality in airplanes with mixing ventilation. 38 The ways in which gaspers might influence the transmission of airborne infectious diseases in aircraft cabins with conventional and personalized ventilation are still unclear. The impact of gaspers deserves in-depth exploration in future studies.…”

“…This study used the simplified gasper model proposed by You et al [7] in the CFD simulation. Three grid resolutions, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.65 million, were tested in You et al [7] for CFD grid independence. The resolution of 0.3 million was sufficiently fine to obtain grid independent results.…”

“…In commercial airplanes, personalized ventilation is typically provided by a system of gaspers, the small, circular, and adjustable vents above the seats passengers. When passengers turn on the gaspers, the air distribution in the cabin is altered [6,7]. Consequently, the transport of airborne infectious contaminants is affected [8].…”

“…They found that the CO 2 concentration with the mixing air distribution was fairly uniform, and the mixing air distribution system could spread infectious diseases. You et al [10,11] developed a consolidated turbulence model and a simplified gasper geometry model in a CFD program for predicting the airflow and contaminant transport in a cabin with gaspers. The CFD program was then used to investigate the impact of the gaspers on contaminant transport in the economy-class cabins of Boeing 767 and 737 airliner.…”
