Abstract-The Restionaceae species of the Fynbos biome is part of the Cape Floristic Kingdom is threatened by urbanization, agricultural expansion, groundwater extraction, and climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to assess and monitor the Restionaceae species under the impact of climate change. South Africa is a semi-arid environment, and hydrological factors are the main variables in the determination of species niches. This study investigates the microclimate at Jonkershoek, and examines the impact of climate change to the plant species distribution, thus creating shifts in the hydrological niche. This study generates its own unique microclimate hydrological datasets for modelling species niche. The Restionaceae species and their hydrological niche at the Jonkershoek study area are assessed under future climate change scenario, at a microclimatic level. It provided evidence regarding the importance of the study to understanding the climate change impacts on hydrological niche and on species richness.

This study investiagates the microclimate at Silvermine, and examines the contribution of hydrological variables to plant species distribution, thus creating a hydrological niche. This study generates its own unique microclimate hydrological datasets for modelling species niche. Additionally, this study assessed and modelled the effectiveness of the use of hydrological variables to determine species hydrological niche, at a microclimate level in a semi-arid environment. It also provided evidence regarding the importance of the study to conservation and future climate change impact analysis of plant species and species richness.

Abstract-The Common Swift Apus apus, a species that has undergone major range expansion within South Africa in the past few decades, provides an opportunity to determine whether this change in range was indeed driven by changes in climate. This question was explored using species distribution modelling, combining predictive and retrodictive approaches. Using distribution and climate in the 1960s as the baseline, climate models were used to predict range changes of the swifts at decadal intervals into the 2000s, which were then compared with observed ranges of the swifts at the same time intervals. Based on comparisons between patterns of changing climate and changes in both model predicted distributions and observed distribution patterns, the species distribution model proves to have sufficient power to predict the species' range expansion. This study thus provides compelling evidence for a major range change of a bird species in South Africa being driven primarily by climatic factors.Index Terms-Climate change, common swift, range shift, South Africa.
