Predicted and actual fetal weight throughout the last trimester.

Abstract: The aim of our study was to obtain, in normal pregnancies, references values of predicted and actual fetal weight for both male and female fetuses and for fetuses born to nulliparous and multiparous women between weeks 28 and 41 of gestation. Predicted fetal weight curves represented calculations of weight in the third trimester based on weight data obtained during the second trimester.

“…Male fetuses have higher growth velocities than female fetuses in the third trimester, [42][43][44] when the human brain more than doubles its weight. 45 It is therefore possible that SGA boys may be more vulnerable to growth restriction during this period than girls.…”

“…A biological explanation of the different effect of caffeine intake on the growth of male and female fetuses remains more obscure. Gender differences in fetal growth become particularly apparent during the third trimester, male fetuses having higher growth velocities than female 24,26 , 27 . Thus, an unspecific effect on fetal growth late in pregnancy may contribute to the difference.…”
