Predictability of Reef Fish Recruitment in a Highly Variable Nursery Habitat

Abstract: Abstract. There has been a lengthy debate on whether the abundance of adult reef fishes depends on prerecruitment or postrecruitment processes; however, we still do not have the ability to predict the magnitude of local fish recruitment. Here we show that the success of the leopard grouper (Mycteroperca rosacea) recruitment in the Gulf of California, Mexico, is determined by the availability of nursery habitat, which in turn is strongly correlated to climate conditions. Observational and experimental studies s… Show more

“…On the southern gulf coast of Baja California Sur, most research on fisheries and environmental variability has focused on documenting fluctuations in fish abundance and distribution (e.g., Aburto-Oropeza et al 2007. In other parts of the Gulf and Pacific coast, scholars have investigated adaptation strategies and vulnerability of fishing communities to climate change (e.g., McGuire and Greenberg 1993, Vásquez-León 1994, McCay et al 2011, Morzaria-Luna et al 2014).…”

“…4). A positive relationship between nursery size and abundance has been demonstrated on several occasions (Van der Veer et al 2000, Aburto-Oropeza et al 2007, Claudet et al 2008). In the case of adult competition regulation, i.e.…”

“…We used the ecosystems inhabited by each focal species (Table S6) to represent their spawning and/or recruitment habitats, and assumed they all have, potentially, equal per unit area contributions of larvae. We did not distinguish between spawning and recruitment habitats because for our targeted species both are mainly areas within rocky reef systems (Aburto-Oropeza et al, 2007, Soria et al, 2012.…”
