Predation on Tropidurus hispidus (Squamata: Tropiduridae) by Lasiodora klugi (Aranea: Theraphosidae) in the semiarid caatinga region of northeastern Brazil

Abstract: A predation event on Tropidurus hispidus (Tropiduridae) by the crab spider Lasiodora klugi (Theraphosidae) was observed in an arboreal caatinga area in northeastern Brazil. Arthropods are potential predators of small vertebrates and researchers have reported predation events involving spiders and herpetofauna in Neotropical regions. As such, the present short communication is the second case of predation of spiders on Tropidurus lizards in Brazil, and the first for the semiarid caatinga, reinforcing the argume… Show more

“…In addition, spiders have a generalist diet (Riechert & Harp, 1987) and a variety of hunting modalities, ranging from active foraging to ambush or sit‐and‐wait strategies (Willemart & Lacava, 2017), combined with the ability to build webs to trap prey (Foelix, 2011; Gosline et al., 1999). All these characteristics, in addition to the fact that spiders can have larger body size than some vertebrate species, allow them to prey upon different vertebrate taxa (McCormick & Polis, 1982; Vieira et al., 2012).…”

“…Tropidurus hispidus (S , 1825) (Squamata, Iguania, Tropiduridae) is a lizard species widely distributed along South America that may be found in different habitats throughout its geographic distribution (Rodrigues, 1987(Rodrigues, , 1988Avila-Pires, 1995;Carvalho, 2013). Lizards of this species feed on arthropods, small vertebrates, and plant material (Vitt et al, 1996;Van Sluys et al, 2004;Freire, 2009, 2011;Zanchi et al, 2012), and serve as prey for both invertebrates, such as spiders (Vieira et al, 2012) and vertebrates, as, for example, lizards (Sales et al, 2011;Silva et al, 2013). Siphlophis leucocephalus and T. hispidus are sympatric in some locations along their geographical range.…”
