Precursors and formation of secondary organic aerosols from wildfires in the Euro-Mediterranean region

Abstract: Abstract. This work aims at quantifying the relative contribution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) precursors emitted by wildfires to organic aerosol (OA) formation during summer of 2007 over the Euro-Mediterranean region, where intense wildfires occurred. A new SOA formation mechanism, H2Oaro, including recently identified aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from wildfires, is developed based on smog chamber experiment measurements under low- and high-NOx regimes. The aromatic VOCs included i… Show more

“…As we pointed out in the introduction, there have been few studies about NPF events around the Mediterranean Sea [35,[43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50]77,78]. On the north-eastern part of Crete island (Finokalia station, costal, April 2008-April 2009), the mean GR was 5.2 ± 3.4 nm/h [77].…”

“…Furans are also released into the atmosphere as a result of biomass burning, [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] and are generated during the atmospheric oxidation of biogenic compounds such as isoprene and butadiene. 18,19 The use of furans as biofuels could lead to substantial further emissions into the atmosphere, with potential impacts on air quality and climate.…”

“…These simplified mechanisms were first designed focusing on reproducing the evolution of ozone concentrations. However, in response to changing regulations and the need to represent particulate matter and SOA, they have subsequently been modified by adding chemical reactions to describe the SOA formation (e.g., [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]). HO X concentrations often remain determined by the original mechanism only.…”
