The steeply inclined and extremely thick coal seams (SIETCS) under the condition of gob filling frequently suffer from the occurrence of rockbursts. Figuring out the mechanisms of rockbursts under this condition for taking targeted measures to mitigate rockburst hazards in SIETCS is of great significance. Using the typical SIETCS with an average dip angle of 87° at Wudong Coal Mine (WCM) as a case study, a mechanical model and elastic deformation energy (EDE) function of a “steeply inclined suspended roof structure” was developed, and the influence factors were analyzed by theoretical analysis. Simultaneously, the rockburst risk assessment was carried out based on the theory of a rockburst start-up. The pressure relief measures are optimized by comparing the pressure relief effects of three kinds of destress blasting schemes. The results indicate that the damage characteristics of rockburst are mainly floor heave, the sidewall’s inward deformation and roof subsidence. The damage degree of headentry on the roof side is more severe than that of tailentry, and the resultant impacts showed the directionality from the roof side to the coal side. The steeply inclined and suspended roof breakage is one of the main causes for the occurrence of rockbursts. The EDE of the roof increases with an increasing dip angle of the coal seam from 0° to 72.6° and then decreases as the dip angle increases. Furthermore, that increase is accompanied by the decrease of the lateral pressure coefficient and the supporting force coefficient. The EDE stored in the roof is sufficient to cause roof breakage and induce rockburst after the complete roof exceeds a certain length. The mechanism of rockburst in SIETCS for fully mechanized top-coal caving mining under gob filling conditions was proposed, i.e., “high compressive stress concentration plus breakage of the suspended roof-induced stress” rockburst, and this is further verified by ground destruction, microseismic (MS) monitoring and numerical modeling. The results also indicate that alternate deep and shallow hole-blasting modes are more suitable for pressure relief in SIETCS.

As a severe hazard in coal mining and rock excavation, the rockburst is usually induced by the high energy tremor. Microseismic (MS) monitoring is suggested to forecast the rockburst risk to reduce its damage. The paper aims to investigate contribution of multi-MS data, including MS raw wave data and MS energy data, to prediction of the high energy tremor, using support vector machine (SVM) together with genetic algorithm (GA). MS monitoring data recorded for more than 400 days at Wudong coal mine of Xinjiang, China, were used in the paper. 132 and 24 features are initially extracted from MS raw wave and energy data in the frequency domain, entropy and time-frequency domain, respectively. GA is not only used to select effective ones among initially extracted features, but also optimize hyperparameters for SVM to classify high energy tremors from general MS events. The performances of the proposed approach based on multi-MS data are evaluated by cross-validation. The results show that the classifier achieves 98% sensitivity, 88% accuracy and 87% specificity using both MS raw wave and energy data, which is better than solely utilizing MS raw wave (98% sensitivity, 84% accuracy and 83% specificity) or energy data (98% sensitivity, 86% accuracy and 85% specificity). These findings suggest that MS raw wave data makes important contribution to rockburst risk prediction as well as MS energy data, and the better performance can be achieved when utilizing two kinds of data simultaneously. The investigation of the in situ stress distribution has always been a key condition for engineering design of deep tunnels and analysis of surrounding rock stability. In this paper, a comprehensive judgment method coupled with pressure/tension (P/T) axis mechanism and geological structure is proposed to invert the in situ stress in the Duoxiongla tunnel in Tibet. In the process of TBM tunnel excavation, 3887 groups of microseismic events were collected by means of microseismic monitoring technology. By studying the temporal and spatial distribution of 3887 groups of microseismic events, 42 groups of microseismic data were selected for in situ stress inversion. Then the focal mechanisms of 42 groups of microseisms were inverted. Combined with the analysis of the previous geological survey, the inversion results of the in situ stress were analyzed. According to the focal mechanism of the tunnel area, the linear in situ stress inversion method was used to invert the in situ stress in the source area. Finally, according to the PTGS (pressure/tension axis mechanism and geological structure) comprehensive judgment method proposed in this paper, the in situ stress of the tunnel microseismic region was determined. The results show that there are mainly three groups of fissures and joint surfaces in the tunnel area, and the in situ stress is dominated by the horizontal tectonic stress; the main driving force of the rupture surface in the excavation process of Duoxiongla tunnel is the horizontal tectonic stress; the distribution of the maximum and minimum principal stress obtained by the inversion is consistent with the distribution of the P/T axis; combined with the linear in situ stress inversion method and the comprehensive judgment of PTGS, the azimuth and dip angles of the three principal stresses are finally determined as N90.71°E, 4.06°, N5.35°W, 3.06°, and N8.10W, 85.32°, respectively. The study verifies the feasibility of microseismic inversion of in situ stress.
