“…Typically, RBEs (relative biological effectiveness) for neutrons are between 2 and 5, varying with factors such as dose, endpoint and neutron energy [33]. RBEs of approximately 3 were found for moist desquamation and late dermal necrosis in pig skin (a model of human skin) using the neutron beam in this study (66 MeV pǞBe vs. 60 Co) for fractionated schedules similar to the clinical schedules described [4]. To achieve a therapeutic gain, the tumor RBE should be greater than normal tissue RBE.…”

“…Radiobiologists from Groote Schuur and Tygerberg Hospitals and the National Accelerator Centre undertook biological calibration experiments and conducted scientific investigations using the latest techniques, which contributed to the clinical utilisation and better understanding of these novel radiation modalities. 20,21,22,23,24,25 Research and teaching activities were cultivated and, up until 2002, the radiobiological momentum produced over 20 postgraduate degrees from Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town, but none have been produced since.…”

“…ducreyi is primarily a cutaneous pathogen; while involvement of regional lymph nodes is not uncommon in chancroid, H. ducreyi is seldom recovered from bubo aspirates (25), and the bacteria do not invade deeper tissue or cause systemic disease (34). Because the skin of juvenile pigs closely resembles human skin both structurally and physiologically (6,13,23,26,32,55,56), we investigated the ability of H. ducreyi to cause dermal lesions in swine. Lesions histologically resembling natural human chancres developed in pig skin following inoculation through abrasions in the epithelium, providing a useful animal model for the study of H. ducreyi pathogenesis and host response to infection.…”
