Precision measurement of the ratio of the charged kaon leptonic decay rates

Abstract: A precision measurement of the ratio RKRK of the rates of kaon leptonic decays K±→e±νK±→e±ν and K±→μ±νK±→μ±ν with the full data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2007–2008 is reported. The result, obtained by analysing View the MathML source∼150000 reconstructed K±→e±νK±→e±ν candidates with 11% background contamination, is RK=(2.488±0.010)×10−5RK=(2.488±0.010)×10−5, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation

“…Further constraints arise from leptonic and semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons K, D, D s , B (see [72,73] for kaon decays, [74,75] for D and D S decay rates, and [76,77] for B-meson observations). Recent studies suggest that in the framework of the SM extended by sterile neutrinos the most severe bounds arise from the violation of lepton universality in leptonic kaon decays (parametrised by the observable ∆r K ) [58,78].…”

“…Leptonic and semileptonic meson decays: further constraints arise from decays of pseudoscalar mesons K, D, D s and B, with one or two neutrinos in the final state (see [68,69] for kaon decays, [70,71] for D and D s decay rates, and [72,73] for B-meson observations). In the framework of the SM extended by sterile neutrinos, these decays have recently been addressed in [21,22].…”
