COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease 2019) is a pandemic which has been spreading exponentially around the globe. Many countries adopted stay-athome or lockdown policies to control its spreading. However, prolonged stay-at-home may cause worse effects like economical crises, unemployment, food scarcity, and mental health problems of individuals. This article presents a smart consumer electronics solution to facilitate safe and gradual opening after stay-at-home restrictions are lifted. An Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) enabled wearable called EasyBand is introduced to limit the growth of new positive cases by auto contact tracing and by encouraging essential social distancing.

The continuous monitoring systems developed for health and safety provisions in underground mines have always been a deep concern in mining activity, since this is one of the most dangerous work activities in the world. All mining activities must follow strict regulations that pose an increased responsibility for the design and implementation of novel technologies aiming to enhance both the workers’ and equipment’s safety in underground mines. Coal mines are some of the most dangerous, with high risk of explosion due to pit gas; therefore, we propose the use of visible light communication for local wireless transmission and optical fiber for remote-cabled transmission. We address, in this article, a complete system comprising real-time personnel tracking and environmental methane measurement, as well as the transmission of data, with a detailed explanation of the complete system and technical description with practical solutions applicable for industrial use.

Internet of Things (IoT) technology has been widely used for real-time monitoring of the environment, safety and production in underground mines. This paper presents the basic structure of a Mine Internet of Things (MIoT) system based on a widely used three-layer IoT architecture, classifies types of sensors commonly used in underground mines by specific application, and introduces available wired and wireless communication technologies and network topologies that can be applied in underground mines. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in IoT applications in underground mines to monitor various environmental parameters, including mine gas and dust concentrations, temperature, humidity and airflow, groundwater, ground support and seismic activity. MIoT applications for fire and hazard detection, personnel and equipment positioning, and production safety management have also been investigated. This paper highlights key challenges for the broad application of IoT technology in underground mines such as operation disruption, additional investment, limited battery life, poor quality of underground communication, and difficulty in data management. Further research on novel advanced techniques, such as selfpowered sensors, MIoT standardization and underground wireless communication technologies, is essential to improve the applicability and effectiveness of IoT applications in underground mines.
