“…Otherwise, with regard to short-range distance detection, the laser spot is smaller compared with the efficient reflecting surface of the detected target, and the detected target is typically noncooperative and can be assumed as a Lambertian target. In this case, the radar cross-section of detected target σ can be described as Equation (5). Accordingly, the photodetector detectable power P r is expressed by Equation ( 6) [36,37].…”

“…Nowadays, the rapid developments in autonomous driving, unmanned aerial vehicles, robotics, and automotive industries have put forward higher requirements for 3-D imaging obstacle avoidance systems [ 4 ]. For this purpose, using laser ranging techniques to obtain target distances in different azimuths by controlling the scanning angle of the spatial beam is a tried-and-true solution [ 5 ]. For example, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the U.S. launched ‘the Sweeper’, a small laser radar specially designed for autonomous driving.…”

“…Within a fixed time window, the echo delay pulses sequentially trigger the laser transmitter to generate a pulse laser, and the counter records the number of echo pulses received within that time window, finally, calculate the actual distance. This method improves the precision of pulse laser ranging from centimeter level to millimeter level [30]. In order to further improve the accuracy of laser ranging, and taking into account the characteristics of the TOF pulse laser ranging method and the advantages of simple system structure, this paper proposes a laser ranging method based on double-threshold echo pulse prediction correction.…”

“…TOF measurements are usually performed using the pulse counting method, and the timing error is the primary source of the system error. Tao et al [10] proposed a pulsed laser ranging method based on a multi-echo delay trigger, which transmit the echo signal of the pulsed laser into a delay unit and generate an electric pulse with a fixed delay to trigger the laser transmitter to generate the pulsed laser. Multiple delayed echo signals are triggered within a fixed time window to transmit pulses in turn, then the distance can be calculated according to the several echo pulses received and recorded by a counter.…”
