Precision Angle Measurement Systems on the Basis of Ring Laser Gyro

Abstract: The main application of a ring laser gyroscope is navigation. It is currently the most widely used device for strapdown inertial navigation systems. However, it is also applicable for high-precision angle metrology systems. This paper discusses the properties of a laser dynamic goniometer (LDG) based on the ring laser gyroscope and designed for the calibration of optical polygons and digital angle converters, and for the measurement of angles between external mirrors (theodolite operating mode). We consider th… Show more

“…Currently, many measurement methods exist to realize the direction of the artillery barrel, divided into contact and noncontact measurements. Contact measurement methods include optical component measurement [3][4] and strap-down inertial navigation measurement [5] [6]. Non-contact measurement includes theodolite [7][8], total station [9] [10], and machine vision [11] [12].…”

“…That is why in the best angle measuring systems (for example, the angle comparator, PTB, Germany [ 4 ]), the diameter of the angle scale reaches 400 mm. When using ring lasers (RL) [ 10 , 11 ], the circular scale is formed by the structure of the electromagnetic field of counter propagating waves, and the distance between the strokes is equivalent to the period of the standing wave formed in the RL resonator. This distance is also determined by the wavelength of the light.…”

“…Laser gyroscope is a new generation of inertial measurement element. Compared with traditional mechanical gyroscope, it has many outstanding advantages and has been widely used in many fields [1]. The accuracy of the output signal of laser gyro will directly affect the alignment efficiency of inertial navigation system.…”
