Precision and Accuracy in Measurements: A Tale of Four Graduated Cylinders

Abstract: Students need to be aware of the fact that even our best scientific measurements unavoidably involve some error. To develop this awareness, general chemistry courses introduce the concepts of precision and accuracy. The distinction between the two terms is illustrated in textbooks through the analogy of a target with arrows more or less clustered around the bull's eye. After this brief introduction many texts do not develop the subject further. This paper expands upon the topic of precision and accuracy at a le… Show more

“…The first experiment found in general chemistry laboratories is often related to the basics of measurements. Treptow discussed a general chemistry experiment using graduated cylinders to help students understand the precision and accuracy of measurements . Jordan discussed the precision and accuracy of measurements using different measuring methods demonstrating that some methods work better for specific measurements .…”

“…To demonstrate the principles of statistics in the lab, students must carry out an experiment that can be performed in a short period of time so that many replicates are obtained yielding a statistically valid data set. Unfortunately, the relatively large amount of time required to complete most chemical analyses prevents the collection of a significant amount of data within the limits of a typical laboratory session; thus experiments used for a statistics lab are often simple in scope (1)(2)(3)(4). For instance, Treptow reported an experiment that measured the volume of a graduated cylinder as a model for introducing precision and accuracy and to illustrate the difference between systematic and random errors in experimental results (4 ).…”
