Architectural patterns are a fundamental aspect of the architecting process and subsequently the architectural documentation. Unfortunately, there is only poor support for modeling architectural patterns for two reasons. First, patterns describe recurring design solutions and hence do not directly match the elements in modeling languages. Second, they support an inherent variability in the solution space that is hard to model using a single modeling solution. This paper proposes to address this problem by finding and representing architectural primitives MotivationThe software architecture of a system needs to be rigorously documented in order to profit from the advantages of architecture-centric development and evolution. One of the most significant aspects of documenting software architectures is the representation of architectural patterns (also known as architectural styles 1 ). In general, a pattern is a problem-solution pair in a given context. A pattern does not only document 'how' a solution solves a problem but also 'why' it is solved, i.e., the rationale behind this particular solution. Architectural patterns help to document architectural design decisions, facilitate communication between stakeholders through a common vocabulary, and assist in analyzing 1 In this paper we do not distinguish between the terms 'architectural pattern' (used e.g. in [6, 39, 44]) and 'architectural style' (used e.g. in [42]). For the sake of simplicity, we shall use only the term 'architectural pattern' for the rest of this paper. Their commonalities and differences are elaborated in [2]. 1 the quality attributes of a software system. There are three major approaches, that have been used so far for modeling architectural patterns:1. Abstract. Design patterns have proved very helpful in encapsulating the knowledge required for solving design related problems, and have found their way into the CHI domain. Many interface patterns can be formalised and expressed via UML models, which provides the opportunity to incorporate such patterns into CASE tools in order to assist user interface designers. This paper presents an implemented tool-based approach for the discovery of an appropriate set of design patterns applicable to a high-level model of the system. The tool accepts a UML model of the system and presents a set of interface design patterns that can be used to create an effective implementation. The tool is aimed at providing designers with guidance as to which successful design approaches are potentially appropriate for a new interactive system, acting as a supportive aid to the design process. The use of high-level modelling approaches allows designers to focus on the interactions and nature of their systems, rather than on the technologically-driven details.

SUMMARYThe semantic link network (SLN) is the extension of the hyperlink Web by attaching semantics to hyperlinks. It is an approach to construct a semantic overlay on Web resources. The specification of the semantics of the SLN model is an essential issue of SLN application. This paper proposes a modeling language for SLN consisting of an algebraic definition for SLN, a SLN metamodel and a Unified Modeling Language (UML) profile for SLN. The SLN metamodel specifies the primitives of the modeling language. The UML profile for SLN defines the specific syntax on SLN to make the modeling language understandable and usable. The development of the SLN builder implementing this language and the graphical SLN browser is introduced. This work is a part of the SLN model.
