Precise Half-Life Values for Two-Neutrino Double-β Decay: 2020 Review

Abstract: All existing positive results on two-neutrino double beta decay and two-neutrino double electron capture in different nuclei have been analyzed. Weighted average and recommended half-life values for 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 96Zr, 100Mo, 100Mo - 100Ru (01+), 116Cd, 128Te, 130Te, 136Xe, 150Nd, 150Nd - 150Sm (01+), 238U, 78Kr, 124Xe and 130Ba have been obtained. Given the measured half-life values, effective nuclear matrix elements for all these transitions were calculated.

“…Double beta decay occurs when a nucleus spontaneously changes its atomic number by two units [1]. Despite the low probability for this process to happen, double beta decay has been already observed for 12 nuclei, with typical half-lives in the range of 10 18 -10 24 yr [2]. In recent times, some expera e-mail: cupid.publications@lngs.infn.it (corresponding author) b Also at Physik-Department, Technische Universität München, Garching, Germany imental techniques have reached such a high precision on the measurement of this process that today it is possible to infer important nuclear properties or even search for physics beyond the Standard Model of Particles and Fields (SM) by studying spectral distortions [3][4][5][6][7][8][9].…”

“…The collaboration quoted a signal due to the 2ν2 decay in 124 Xe with the half-life of (1.8 ± 0.5 stat ± 0.1 sys ) × 10 22 yr [171]. However, the significance of the effect is only 4.4 σ, as addressed in the literature (see e.g., Reference [192]). To be thorough, it should also be noted that a limit T 1/2 ≥ 2.1 × 10 22 yr was previously obtained in Reference [172] (see Table 1).…”

“…However, in a following geochemical experiment, a T 1/2 = (6.0 ± 1.1) × 10 20 yr [175] was obtained in disagreement with the previous results. More recently, in Reference [198], a summary of the previous measurements was attempted while considering a more reliable value of T 1/2 = (2.2 ± 0.5) × 10 21 yr, as recommended in Reference [192] (see Table 1).…”
