Precise Diffusion Coefficients for White Dwarf Astrophysics

Abstract:Observations of galactic white dwarfs with Gaia have allowed for unprecedented modeling of white dwarf cooling, resolving core crystallization and sedimentary heating from neutron rich nuclei. These cooling sequences are sensitive to the diffusion coefficients of nuclei in Coulomb plasmas which have order 10% uncertainty and are often not valid across coupling regimes. Using large scale molecular dynamics simulations we calculate diffusion coefficients at high resolution in the regime relevant for white dwarf … Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
