After sketching some of the historical and theoretical developments in the eighteenth-century crisis of fatherhood, "Kleist and the Resurrection of the Father" reads three Kleist novellas, The Marquise of O . . ., The Earthquake of Chili, and The Foundling, as companion pieces that expose the radically destabilized nature of paternity at the close of the eighteenth century. Arguing that Kleist's fathers are caught in the tension of bios and nomos, the essay demonstrates how documents and bodies undermine each others' claims to establish paternity. Precisely because all attempts to ground fatherhood biologically, metaphysically, ethically, or politically fail on some level, none of them can emerge as dominant, and all of them survive their own delegitimization. In consequence, Kleistian fatherhood exists in a strange realm of Ungleichzeitigkeit, the state of non-synchronicity Ernst Bloch defined as the simultaneous existence of historically distinct ideologies within a shared but non-identical "now."

Focusing on the scene of reconciliation between the heroine and her father, the article traces the epistemological, erotic, and aesthetic impact of father-daughter intimacy in Kleist's Die Marquise von O .... While the protagonists rely on bourgeois notions of sexuality, daughterhood, and family bonds that allow them to ignore the libidinal dynamics at home, the reader is asked to reflect on the difficulties of distinguishing between emotions and eroticism within an intimate early nineteenth-century family. This epistemological asymmetry is paralleled by aesthetic ambiguities. By presenting father-daughter desire in the scene of reconciliation as a quotation from contemporary theater and tableaux vivants , the novel not only parodies dramatic traditions, but also reveals the erotic impact of successful theatricality. We often speak of a text “pregnant” with meaning. But how does it give birth? Certainly not through the intervention of monologic doctoring but, rather, with the aid of “dialogic midwifery.” In Kleist's Marquise von O, the tale of an unexplained conception and pregnancy, the art of ironic dialogism, though never directly giving expression to the peculiar state of affairs, helps give birth to interpretation and to the genre of the realistic novella. The circuitous narrative technique of telling and untelling, which supplements consciousness as a midwife assists a woman in childbirth, links Kleist's text to a hermeneutic tradition stretching from Plato through Kant (and well beyond).
